Brrrr... Snow in Nome!?

Not an impossibility, it's happened before. It's about 1 am and the snow is still barreling down. (global warming, feh!) It's an awesome sight but this really going to test my space heaters. Batteries in the camera are dead so if anyone else wants to reply with an image to this post it's encouraged.

later all.

Feb 2009

I am interested in hearing from anyone that has had any real success with the digital converter boxes and the amount of local available channels. So far I have tried 2 different boxes and 1 equal disappointment. I think a better antennae is the answer but I know people that get awesome reception with rabbit ears and an amplifier. What is missing? Ever since the horrible Cameron Phone Company cut down all the coaxial cable infrastructure making cable TV/Internet impossible here. All hope is gone for good TV unless you have a new digital converter box w/antenna, satellite service or want to buy their very overpriced digital service.

So Cameron Communications acquires the cable TV system in Nome and then swiftly cuts it all down from the poles so that their crappy, digital TV and DSL will be the only option. I was keeping my fingers crossed this past year that CMA would take it over and give the people here an option for TV/ internet. No such luck.

living in Nome:
$80 for TV (w/a phone line)
$130 for TV, Internet, phone; lousy deal

living anywhere else but Nome:
$39 for high speed cable internet or
$29 for clunky DSL
$0-- no phone required.
most people have cell phones now so no land line is necessary.

Am I the only one that sees a big disparity in service? Call a friend in Houston and see what they are paying for basic telecom service and get ready to lose your composure. Rural customers get screwed.

BTW, did you order your coupons for the digital boxes yet? go to https://www.dtv2009.gov before it's too late. Yea, it's like soliciting the government for free stuff, but then, think about what they have already taken. It was your money to begin with.

Get things rolling

This blog is for swapping stories, creation of ideas, public announcements, general venting about current events and life in the little city of Nome, Texas. Don't like Cameron Phone and the overpriced, terrible services they provide? Don't like the municipal water service or the fact that garbage pickup isn't included with the bill (like the rest of the civilized world)? This is a forum to discuss anything that concerns the citizens of Nome will, hopefully, make our little community better for everyone.
